Fire hits apartments at Moulin Rouge site

One apartment was damaged this morning in a fire at the Desert Breeze Apartments, 920 W. Bonanza Road, part of the old Moulin Rouge complex.

Windows in an upstairs apartment on the northwest corner of the complex were blown out, and smoke damage was visible outside the window frames this morning.

The fire started shortly before 10 a.m., said Tim Szymanski, a spokesman for the Las Vegas Fire Department.

No one was home at the time, but a neighbor noticed the fire and stuck his head in the door to see if anyone was inside the apartment. The man, whose name was not released, was transported to University Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation, Szymanski said.

At least four Las Vegas fire engines arrived on the scene, and one paramedic appeared to be treating a woman's wrist on the site, but she did not appear to be seriously injured.

The building was in the same complex as the historic Moulin Rouge Casino, which was mostly destroyed in a four-alarm fire in 2003.

The cause of this morning's fire was not yet determined, Szymanski said.
