I'm delighted to see that Nevada is awash in sales tax revenue, but I'm not delighted about Gov. Kenny Guinn's proposal for using the $300 million surplus. He would return this money to taxpayers by rebating car-registration fees paid in 2004. Speaking only for myself, I would rather see the governor put the surplus toward more police officers. This would mean more to me than receiving a few hundred bucks for my two cars.
We could then eliminate the need for the two-stage sales tax increases for more Metro Police officers. I understand that the state Highway Patrol is also understaffed.
A lot of police officers could be hired for $300 million.
