Proposed golf course rule aims at using recycled water

Clark County Commissioner Bruce Woodbury introduced an ordinance Wednesday barring any new golf courses from being built that do not use reclaimed water.

Woodbury announced the ordinance -- which could halt construction of new facilities or expansions to existing ones -- last week in response to what he said were prolonged drought conditions that strain Southern Nevada's water supply. The matter is now expected to come before the full commission in September.

The proposed ordinance grew from a Clark County Growth Task Force recommendation that officials focus more energy on conserving water, he said. Commissioners last week directed county staff to begin crafting language for the moratorium.

Wednesday's introduction formally suspended any new facilities until commissioners have a change to review the policy, which Woodbury said last week could remain in effect for up to three years.

Woodbury's moratorium affects only unincorporated Clark County, although individual cities may create their own ordinances.
