Hampton overcame spending deficit

Henderson Municipal Court candidate Diana Hampton was outspent by more than $45,000 when she won a narrow victory June 7 over Michael Miller.

Hampton raised slightly more than $42,000 and spent more than $36,000 for the campaign that included a primary in April and general election in June, according to campaign financial reports released by the Henderson city clerk.

Miller raised and spent nearly $82,000.

Hampton, who received 51 percent of the vote, not only had to overcome an opponent who spent more money but who had the backing of Henderson Mayor Jim Gibson, former Police Chief Michael Mayberry and David Gibson Jr., the mayor's nephew who finished third in the primary.

Hampton won despite acknowledging she worked as a topless dancer to help finance her college career.
