State Spelling Bee on tap Saturday

The Nevada State Spelling Bee will begin 10 a.m. Saturday in the Classroom Building Complex, Room 110 on the UNLV campus.

The State Spelling Bee is the preliminary competition to determine who will be Nevada's representative at the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in late May.

Three spellers (one sixth, seventh and eighth grade student) from each of Nevada's 17 counties are eligible to compete for the state title. Sixteen counties will participate in the 2005 competition.

Parliamentarians gather for meeting

The Nevada State Association of Parliamentarians will sponsor a joint meeting of two parliamentary study units in March.

The Lake Mead and Silver Mace Units will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Rendezvous Room of Sunrise Hospital, 3186 Maryland Parkway.

The event will feature a short model meeting, demonstrating the proper procedures for expediting business, and a group competition based on the popular Jeopardy TV show and Robert's Rules of Order, 10th edition.

Everyone interested in learning more about parliamentary procedure and meeting management is invited to attend. Refreshments will be provided. Register by calling 435-0498.

Filmmaker Burns to give UNLV lecture

As part of the Barrick Lecture Series at UNLV, the award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns will present "Sharing the American Experience" 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Artemus Ham Hall at UNLV.

During the presentation, Burns will explore fundamental questions about the soul of the nation and explain how historical and cultural roots shape who we are as Americans.

Although the event is free and open to the public, tickets are required and will be available Saturday at the Performing Arts Box Office. Tickets are limited to two per person. Call 895-2787.

CCSN chief will speak to NDA

Richard Carpenter, president of Community College of Southern Nevada, will speak at the Nevada Development Authority board meeting 7 a.m. Thursday at the Stardust, beginning with breakfast and networking.

Carpenter will deliver the keynote speech with a question-and-answer session to follow on how there will be a well-trained work force in place to facilitate the continued, rapid diversification of Southern Nevada's economy.

Lecture to focus on Israeli situation

Legal scholar and Harvard law professor Robert H. Mnookin will present "The Past, Present and Future of West Bank and Gaza Settlements: The Relevance of the Internal Conflict Among Israeli Jews," a lecture at noon Thursday at William S. Boyd School of Law in Room 102 on the UNLV campus.

During the presentation, Mnookin will discuss the issue of Jewish settlements within the occupied territories and the internal conflicts among Israelis and Palestinians that must be addressed before the issue can be resolved.

Also Mnookin will explain how a successful and enduring program of re-settlement will need to address more than just the political needs of the national government.

Lecture on Islam set at CCSN

"Towards Understanding Islam" is the next lecture and forum hosted by the Sociology Club of the Community College of Southern Nevada, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in Caviglia Academic Computing Building, Room C133 at the Community College of Southern Nevada, 700 College Drive, Henderson.

Moderated by . Carlo DeFazio, the panel will also include Aslam Abdullah, Abu Kathir, Houda Afifi, Mohamed Said Rouas, Aziz Eddebbarh and Tony Eddebbarh.

Thursday is the Grand Opening of "Kids Korner"

at Old Town Gallery, 10 W. Pacific Ave., Henderson. Featured will be Dooley Elementary School students artwork themed "Tribute to Georgia O'Keefe," and a reception for artist Francine Dufour, a silk painter, will be 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Food and beverage will be provided.
