Man sentenced in credit card numbers theft

A federal judge on Tuesday sentenced a Las Vegas man to more than five years in prison for allegedly stealing about 1,400 credit card numbers that he acquired from documents and receipts left in dumpsters in Las Vegas.

U.S. District Judge Philip Pro sentenced Scott Edward Whitney, 36, to serve 63 months in prison as a result of Whitney's pleading guilty in May to possessing unauthorized access devices -- Visa and Mastercard credit card numbers -- and using them to purchase items such as clothing or appliances.

The authorities arrested Whitney in July 2003 at the Budget Suites, 2219 N. Rancho Drive, after they learned he was allegedly purchasing merchandise with the unauthorized credit card numbers from that location.

In his guilty plea, Whitney admitted that he possessed 1,408 stolen credit card numbers and used at least 15 to make unauthorized charges, according to the Justice Department.
