Community briefs for May 5, 2005

BLM honors local volunteers

A Mesquite couple and a long-time volunteer at the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area will received national Making A Difference volunteer awards on May 11 in Washington, D.C.

The Bureau of Land Management presents the national awards to volunteers each year.

Willie Stephenitch has educated Red Rock Canyon visitors, designed and developed Trash Bash Day to clean up Red Rock twice a year and helps with the annual Tortoise Trot trail run and Red Rock Day.

Darrell and Terri Wade of Mesquite oversee the Nevada Heritage Stewardship Program, a nonprofit organization under the Nevada Archaeological Association, as part of their volunteer service with the bureau's Ely Field Office. The Wades trained more than 100 new site stewards through eight basic training workshops in 2004.

As a result of the Wades producing a training manual and educational slide shows, the couple managed to have 68 sites in 40 archaeology districts monitored, locating cultural features, repairing vandalism and cleaning up unauthorized dumps.
