Three injured in head-on collision

An 18-year-old woman was critically injured when the white Dodge Intrepid she was driving collided head-on with another vehicle at Carey Avenue and Commerce Street in North Las Vegas.

The driver of the second vehicle, a black Ford pickup truck, sustained a serious head injury and underwent surgery at University Medical Center on Thursday night, said Lt. Paul Womack of North Las Vegas Police's traffic bureau.

The passenger of the pickup, a woman, sustained minor injuries and was stabilized at UMC, Womack said.

The identities of the individuals involved were not released on Thursday.

The accident occurred about 5:30 p.m. The driver of the Dodge was driving westbound on Carey Street and the pickup was traveling eastbound, Womack said.

The pickup allegedly swerved into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with the Dodge, he said.

Womack could not account for why the pickup swerved into the oncoming lane, saying "it's a mystery."

He said police are investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a part.

The Dodge burst into flames after the accident but was extinguished. The 18-year-old driver was rushed to the UMC Trauma Center.

Man found shot dead at Lake Mead

A man was found shot to death Thursday night in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Metro Police said.

About 11:45 p.m. Thursday a driver called 911 after finding the victim in a travel lane on Northshore Road. A sport utility vehicle with its engine still running was nearby, police said.

It's not clear how long the victim was there before he was discovered.

The man's name was not released this morning.

The last homicide at the lake was in May 2002, Roxanne Dey, park spokeswoman, said.

Lawyer appointed to judicial post

A longtime Nevada lawyer has been appointed to a new judicial position in the federal District Court in Las Vegas.

Chief U.S. District Judge Philip Pro announced this week that George W. Foley Jr., 51, has been selected by the district judges of the court to fill the newly created federal magistrate position recently funded by Congress for the District of Nevada.

Magistrate judges perform a wide variety of judicial duties in civil and criminal cases on behalf of the U.S. District Court. Foley will begin work in about 60 to 90 days, and will serve for a term of eight years.

Foley graduated the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and the University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law. He began his career in partnership with his father, George Foley Sr., in 1980 and has been a partner with the law firm of Pearson, Patton, Shea, Foley and Kurtz since 1986.

Foley served as a member of the State Bar of Nevada Southern Disciplinary Board and the Standing Committee on Judicial Ethics and Election Practices, and is currently a member of the Nevada Board of Bar Examiners.

Court rejects man's appeal

The Nevada Supreme Court rejected the appeal Thursday of Demone A. Tisdale, who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of his 18-month-old daughter, Sierra Tisdale, in their Henderson home.

She died of malnutrition and dehydration. Her body was found three days after her death in the back bedroom of her home.

Tisdale, now 24-years-old, was sentenced to 10 years to life in May 2004. He was also found guilty of child abuse and neglect involving his other four children.

Tisdale claimed he was pressured by his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Robert Amundson, into pleading guilty.
