Here is the field, in post position order, with morning line odds, jockey and trainer for the Grade I Preakness Stakes, the second jewel of horse racing's Triple Crown.
1. Malibu Moonshine
Opening odds.....20-1
Jockey: Steve Hamilton
Trainer: King Leatherbury
Winner of six races in 10 lifetime starts, most recently the April 23 Federico Tesio Stakes over the track. Trainer is kingpin of the Maryland circuit and jockey is a capable rider who competes on the Mid-Atlantic tracks. Son of Malibu Moon is the local angle here.
2. High Fly
Opening odds.....9-2
Jockey: Jerry Bailey
Trainer: Nick Zito
Ran a credible race in the Derby. Attended sizzling early pace and still was fighting for the lead halfway down the long Churchill Downs homestretch. Florida Derby winner has five wins in seven lifetime starts. Son of Atticus has top human connections. Don't throw this one out with the Derby water. His running style will fit the Pimlico track well. Solid chance here.
3. Noble Causeway
Opening odds.....10-1
Jockey: Gary Stevens
Trainer: Nick Zito
Just did not fire in the Derby, a by-product of a rough trip. Promising son of Giant's Causeway deserves another chance here. Although the span was five weeks to the Derby, he may have bounced from his runner-up Florida Derby effort. Stevens sees enough to stay, so maybe those who backed him in Louisville should, too. Likely candidate for big effort.
4. Greeley's Galaxy
Opening odds.....15-1
Jockey: David Flores
Trainer: Warren Stute
It was nice to see 83-year-old trainer get a chance at the roses. Lightly raced son of Mr. Greeley was outrun after a sluggish start in the Derby, but did win the Illinois Derby by daylight. He was "that horse," which required a $200,000 supplemental fee to participate in the Derby. Owner Hughes hopes to get back some of that cash here. New rider making his Preakness debut, but is big-race tested. Chance for a Preakness piece.
5. Scrappy T
Opening odds.....20-1
Jockey: Ramon Dominguez
Trainer: Robbie Bailes
New shooter comes here off a Withers Mile win at Aqueduct over an "off" track. Also won the Count Fleet over a "good" track. Gets the circuit's top jockey, who was replaced on High Limit, and his trainer is batting 25 percent at the Pimlico stand. Should be part of pace scenario. Moves up in "off" track conditions. Son of Fit To Fight needs to live up to namesake.
6. Hal's Image
Opening odds.....50-1
Jockey: Jose Santos
Trainer: Barry Rose
Recently won the Unbridled Stakes at Calder race track. Jockey won the Derby/Preakness with Funny Cide in 2003, trainer is a 10 percent winner at Calder. Son of Halo's Image gets hope from Giacomo's Derby upset.
7. Closing Argument
Opening odds.....5-1
Jockey: Cornelio Velasquez
Trainer: Kiaran McLaughlin
Like the Derby winner, has something to prove here. Runner-up as longest shot in Derby field, he almost caused a bigger upset than Giacomo's. Son of Successful Appeal makes fourth start since his February Holy Bull Stakes win at Gulfstream Park. It would be ironic if this guy beats a son of Holy Bull in this race. Has outrun his odds.
8. Galloping Grocer
Opening odds.....30-1
Jockey: Joe Bravo
Trainer: Dominick Schettino
Started career as promising juvenile with three consecutive state-bred victories in New York. Competitive in Gotham Mile and outrun in Wood Memorial. Comes here as beaten favorite in New York-bred stakes race. Son of A P Jet gets hustling rider as only positive feature.
9. Wilko
Opening odds.....10-1
Jockey: Corey Nakatani
Trainer: Craig Dollace
Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner bled in the Derby. Trouble-plagued runner was "off slow and wide" while fourth in San Felipe Stakes, "wide and wider" while third in Santa Anita Derby and "6 to 7 wide" while sixth in Kentucky Derby. Continues to train well. Solid jockey-trainer team, this son of Awesome Again is sitting on a golden trip. In the Preakness?
10. Sun King
Opening odds.....15-1
Jockey: Rafael Bejarano
Trainer: Nick Zito
Outrun in the Derby. Tampa Bay Derby winner may have been over-hyped with Derby fever. Son of Charismatic gets talented new rider here and trainer is not yet ready to give up on him. Backers shouldn't either. Trainer turned around Louis Quatorze from a 16th-place Derby finish to win the 1996 Preakness Stakes.
11. High Limit
Opening odds.....12-1
Jockey: Edgar Prado
Trainer: Bobby Frankel
Banged up and dead last in the Derby. Louisiana Derby winner has lost past two outings after three consecutive victories. Hall of Fame trainer changes riders and adds blinkers to the package for this. Will employ front-running tactics here. Son of Maria's Mon has every chance to turn it around with track bias in favor. Solid dangerous connections.
12. Afleet Alex
Opening odds.....5-2
Jockey: Jeremy Rose
Trainer: Tim Ritchey
Installed the favorite here off consistency and good Derby effort. Son of Northern Afleet has six wins and two seconds in 10 lifetime starts. Big win in Arkansas Derby and the only one in the group of choices to fire in Kentucky Derby. Been training well. Jockey knows this guy best and trainer has unorthodox training schedule that seems to work. On paper, the one to beat.
13. Giacomo
Opening odds.....6-1
Jockey: Mike Smith
Trainer: John Shirreffs
Kentucky Derby winner didn't have a straw in his path and the golden race-shape to win the Derby. Son of Holy Bull has always shown promise and put it all together on the big day. No matter what happens here, they can't take the Derby away. Post won't be a disadvantage with his racing style and he has been training well. Team knows him best and has undying faith in him. Maybe racing world should, too. New banner waver for sport.
Giacomo-who? This may be Giacomo-now!
14. Going Wild
Opening odds.....30-1
Jockey: Robby Albarado
Trainer: D. Wayne Lukas
Outrun and beaten well off in past three races, most recently the Derby. Son of Golden Missile should be part of pace scenario as well. Would be conditioner's finest training achievement if this one turns it around. New jockey may tell the story here.
