Americus police crack down on illegal gambling

The Americus Police Department, the Sumter County Sheriff's Office and the Southwest Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office coordinated the raids. County and city police officers confiscated the gambling machines that had allegedly been used illegally to give out cash prizes, Americus police detective Lt. Richard McCorkle said.

A convenience store had hidden its gambling machines in a room with an "Employees Only" sign on the door, McCorkle said.

District Attorney Cecilia Cooper said the investigation is ongoing and criminal charges might be forthcoming.
