Bonds still on DL

Barry Bonds, whose bat could yet turn out to be a factor in baseball's most winnable division, went through another day of workouts Tuesday at Dodger Stadium but remained on the disabled list, where he has spent the entire season.

"It might be sudden impact," San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean said of Bonds' possible return. "It might be here before you know it."

But, Sabean said, neither the Giants nor the medical staff directing Bonds' workouts are about to put Bonds' health or career in jeopardy by rushing him before he is ready.

Corruption task force forming in FIFA

Soccer's world governing body FIFA is proposing a task force to investigate corruption following a spate of match-fixing cases.

Referee Robert Hoyzer is awaiting trial in Germany on charges of corruption and Italian Serie A team Genoa was demoted to the third division in July for alleged match-fixing.

The move follows a meeting of officials from FIFA and European soccer body UEFA in Zurich to address issues including bribery and betting, multiple ownership of clubs and political interference.

Los Angeles to bid for 2016 Games

The city of Los Angeles will announce plans today to bid for the 2016 Olympics, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Los Angeles is the only U.S. city to host the summer games more than once, having done so in 1932 and 1984.

Unlike 2004 host Athens, Los Angeles has almost all the venues it would need for the games, including the downtown Staples Center, the soccer fields at the Home Depot Center in the nearby city of Carson and the Arrowhead Pond arena in Anaheim.

Other cities considering 2016 bids are Chicago, Rome and Tokyo.
