Letter: Oil companies didn’t keep their promise

In the early '70s, when gasoline was available for 35 to 40 cents a gallon, this nation experienced a gasoline shortage. Although unproven, it was suspected that the oil companies and the oil cartels were somehow responsible for its cause. This started runaway inflation since it gave American companies the fear that the cost of their products would spike drastically.

President Nixon attempted price controls, which proved ineffective since they didn't apply to all. When gasoline and its allied products once again became plentiful, the oil industry was quoted as saying they would do all in their power to develop alterative fuels in order to prevent the massive increases in price and availability.

That was over 30 years ago, and it is safe to say that the industry had no intentions of keeping its promise. Greed, politics and power all play a part in that scenario.

Once again, the citizens of this country are the ones who can't afford to continue to stuff the pockets of these energy behemoths full of cash. A pox on their houses!

Maybe someday the time will come when other forms of energy will replace oil and reduce the need to a mere trickle, a time I look forward to.
