Letter: Another lost opportunity from the president

It's more and more apparent each and every day. George Bush is hardly the man that this country needs to represent us on the world stage. His latest refusal to see Russia become part of the World Trade Organization is another missed opportunity for the United States in terms of helping Russia move forward with economic/political reform.

Bush should be much more concerned with our economic situation with China and less concerned with blocking Russia's entry into the WTO. China enjoys "favorite trade status" with the United States despite the fact that China has closed its borders to most American goods. When it comes to trade, the "road does not run both ways with China." Russia has vast energy resources that we need. Coal, natural gas and oil reserves in Russia are among the largest in the world. We need to encourage Russia to continue her movement toward embracing both capitalism and democracy. Allowing Russia to become part of WTO would be a big step in the right direction.
