Letter: National debt suggests tax cuts are ‘broke’

In his Nov. 15 letter to the editor, Owen Nelson urges that the 110th Congress "shouldn't set out to fix what ain't broke." His first example of what "ain't broke" was the Bush tax cuts.

While it's true that tax cuts may increase revenues and stimulate the economy for those of us who are adults right now, I wonder whether our children and grandchildren share our enthusiasm. They'll be the ones having to pay off the national debt caused by our desire for instant gratification, a national debt that has already reached record levels under Bush and the GOP-controlled Congresses of the past six years.

Tax cuts during a time of war? During a time of record national debt? Insanity! While it is true that tax dollars are "our money," it is equally true that the national debt is "our debt."

Revoke the tax cuts and restore the sensible pay-as-you-go policies implemented by the Clinton administration and more astute Republican Congresses of the 1990s. Once we pay off the national debt, we can truly have it all: tax cuts and adequate funding for social programs.
