Letter: Hoping Canada’s ban inspires Nevada

I have just returned from a week's vacation in Las Vegas and I enjoyed my vacation except for one thing - smoking inside the casinos makes the air almost unbreathable.

Being a nonsmoker myself (I quit 23 years ago), it really bothers me and I found that the people who smoke seem to think that they have the right to pollute the air all over the casino with no consideration for the harmful effects that their smoking may be having on their health and that of others around them. I think that most people would agree that no one has the right to drink and drive. Why then do smokers think that they have the right to fill the air with smoke, which just as surely could cause someone's cancer, which leads to death, perhaps more slowly, but the end result is the same?

If casino managers worry about lost revenue from smokers gambling, I think that they should look at the results of the Ontario, Canada, smoking ban in all public places, including casinos. No loss of revenue has been reported here. In fact, on the contrary, the nonsmokers now can play without the fear of jeopardizing their health by visiting smoke-filled casinos.

I hope that the smoking law in Nevada changes to include a smoking ban in casinos.
