Letter: Abortion violates a fundamental right

Supporters of abortion should see what abortion entails before defending the indefensible. I invite letter writer Eileen Schenck ("Decision on abortion must be the woman's," Nov. 7) to visit the Web site of Silent No More Awareness to see the horror stories of millions of women who have had legal abortions and have suffered physically and psychologically. Visit the Web site of Priests for Life to see the ghastly results of abortion on demand.

Most abortions are performed on young women frightened into believing the easy way out of an unwanted pregnancy is abortion. Abortionists have a financial stake in this and other choices are not presented.

The right to life is not a right granted by the government nor the mother of the unborn. Read the founding document of this nation , where it is proclaimed that we are endowed by our creator with certain unalienable rights, the first of those being life.

Abortion hasn't reduced child abuse, neglect or poverty. Each has risen over the past 30 years of legal abortions, along with teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases and suicide. Are these facts as horrible to Ms. Schenck as they are to me?

Lastly, regarding the contraception myth that, with ready access to contraception, there would be fewer abortions: There is ready access to contraception - girls as young as 12 have been taught about it and shown how to use it, yet unwanted pregnancies abound. Even when properly used, contraception is not 100 percent effective.

There will always be women who can procure an abortion. Should we also legalize drunk en driving, wife abuse, pedophilia and murder?

Abortion is not a compassionate choice for mothers or babies.
