Letter: Bush has sunk U.S. in deep hole

In his Nov. 7 letter to the editor, Fred Herr put on his best rose-colored glasses to find some positives about the Bush administration, stretching so far as to give President Bush credit for the election of a pro-American president in France.

Mr. Herr also praised Bush's ability to keep inflation low, create jobs and keep the economy strong. If Mr. Herr checked the facts he would know that job growth is the lowest it's been since World War II, inflation is the same rate it was in January 2001, and the economy is teetering on the brink of recession , largely because of that record number of individual homeowners he spoke of, whose ranks are now spiraling downward as foreclosures are putting underqualified buyers out of their homes.

If you want to give him credit for bringing third-rate dictators in line in North Korea and Libya, that's fine. Those insignificant leaders were just taking advantage of the president's weakness to gain political and economic concessions from America.

Of course, they were convenient as Bush's "bogeymen du jour" to support his "axis of evil" and his bogus "war on terror," his misguided effort that has turned into the debacle of Iraq that leaves Osama bin Laden and al-Qaida free to plan attacks on our country.

The president has turned a huge budget surplus into a gigantic deficit and mortgaged America's future to China. The American dollar is worth about 70 cents in Europe and worldwide , and respect for America is lower than the dollar.

Unfortunately, future presidents will spend years cleaning up the economic mess created by George W. Bush.
