Letter: It’s sounding like Iraq all over again

In the year and a half before the U.S. invasion, President Bush and his administration conducted a public relations campaign to arouse fear of and anger toward Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

At the beginning, most Americans thought the notion of attacking Iraq was crazy. But administration spokesmen repeatedly berated the Iraqi regime through the media.

Little by little, public sentiment grew in favor of an invasion. The rest of the story is well-known:

Iraq lies in shambles. The U.S. military presence there has no foreseeable end. U.S. prestige in the world is at an all-time low. America is less secure than it was when we started this war.

Today, history is repeating itself. The administration is speaking out with increasing frequency and intensity about the supposed threat posed by Iran. Public support for military action against Iran appears to be growing. In the 15 months remaining in Bush's term of office, there is more than enough time for him to launch a new Middle Eastern war.

It is imperative that Americans and Congress wake up to the deadly game this administration is playing. We must stop this push toward more war before it is too late.
