John H. Esperian’s Monday letter to the editor reminded me what I told several friends when our troops were ordered into Iraq: The only difference between Iraq and Vietnam is one has sand, and the other had jungle!
We went to Iraq looking for “weapons of mass destruction” (anyone remember that?) and to stop “terrorism.” In the past five years the WMDs have never been located and, unfortunately, terrorism will always be around.
As with Vietnam, we have jumped into a quagmire and we don’t know how to get out of it with honor. In the meantime, we’ve lost a lot of fine young Americans in the name of freedom, which we are slowly losing in the name of “security.”
