Letter to the editor:

Sale of faulty arms to Afghanistan a disgrace

Again we thank our Fourth Estate for revealing highly questionable activities. This time it was the dedicated work behind a New York Times investigative story, which was noted by an editorial in Sunday’s Las Vegas Sun (“Contract from hell”) that condemned a contract supplying our trusting Afghan army with obsolete and unreliable arms.

What a disgraceful situation! Isn’t it bad enough that our nation is held in such low esteem? Why did it take so long for the Defense Department’s inspector general to look into this highly embarrassing display?

I would not be surprised if those awarding the contract were given merit raises by their supervisors. If so, they should all be facing demotion, at the least.

Who, if anyone, investigates the background of the proposed suppliers and the products being contracted for?

The company and its owners, responsible for endangering the lives of those who would be using the arms in combat, need to be thoroughly investigated and, if appropriate, heavily fined. Jail time should not be overlooked.

The Defense Department’s contracting program seems to need a complete overhaul. This is not the first time a debacle there was revealed.
