Letter to the editor:

Medicare for state retirees is enough

I read the Friday article by David McGrath Schwartz, “Robbing future to pay present: Retiree benefits,” and frankly I do not understand why all the future health care allocations for government employees, including politicians, are not deleted in their entirety.

Maybe someone can explain to me why the people who work for us deserve a much better health plan than the people who pay their salaries. I believe all government employees, including politicians, should be forced to have Medicare as their health care coverage when they reach the required retirement age.

If the government employees want a better health care program, let them pay for the program with their salaries, just as every other taxpayer has to do. I also believe that if Medicare were everyone’s priority, the very first item on every year’s agenda would be how to maintain, and even better, the Medicare benefits.

Let’s hope the governor has the insight and the vision to correct this injustice, and to put a plan in place that levels the playing field for the government employees and the people who pay their salaries.
