Letter to the editor:

Congress is more to blame than Bush

I really get fed up with people who single out our president as an individual responsible for praise or blame in our nation.

James Poupard’s “76-year-old mind,” as he put it in his Sunday letter, has overlooked a very significant element in his statement about “Clinton’s budget surplus,” “Bush’s war,” “Bush’s tax cut for the wealthy,” etc.

Let me set the record straight by stating that I am not a defender of President Bush and I certainly agree that as the chief executive he has made some bad decisions. That said, let my 77-year-old mind point out to Mr. Poupard what he seemed to overlook: Congress. Members of Congress have more to say and do for both the bad and good in this nation than the president.

Also, as to Mr. Poupard’s statement about “Bush stretching the military,” it is my view that we should consider reestablishing the military draft. Not politically correct, to say the least, but the draft would put all on alert that we are indeed engaged in a conflict for our very survival. A conflict that so far has done more damage and inflicted more casualties in our homeland than World War I, World War II, Korea and Vietnam.
