Letter to the editor:

United States needs an elite president

Unfortunately the Democratic presidential campaign has descended to new lows due to the media’s obsession with lapel pins, shots and beers, bowling and elitism. Webster’s defines elite “as people believed to be the best in a particular group or society.”

Why is that made out to be a negative characteristic for our country’s leader? Is America hellbent on electing Larry the Cable Guy as our president? Haven’t we had enough of the kind of person you want to have a beer with?

Barack Obama has not demonstrated any inclination to look down on the middle class or the poor. He has come up through the ranks against very tough odds to achieve his elite status and he is elite among his peers in uniting people behind honorable causes.

Sen. Obama’s delay in distancing himself from his former pastor does not compare to the failures of the Bush administration caused by the president’s cronyism and his indifference to the character flaws of his appointments.

It was reassuring for me Tuesday to hear Sen. Obama strongly denounce the divisive statements of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. It shows me that he knows “when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em.”

For me, that’s a real issue!
