The average high temperature in Las Vegas last month was just shy of 105 degrees. And to start August, there's plenty more heat where that came from.

Hot and dry weather will dominate this weekend with above-average temperatures both days. The National Weather Service said gusty south winds are likely this afternoon with highs sizzling to 109 degrees.

The mercury will fall slightly this weekend, but that will do little to provide a respite from the August heat.

Forecasters said the high Saturday should reach 108 degrees. The high Sunday should top out near 105. Gusty southwest winds are likely both days.

Any chance of rain will be elusive through early next week.

The weather service said monsoon moisture will work its way back to the Las Vegas Valley on Tuesday. A slight chance of rain is in the forecast Tuesday through Thursday next week, which will cool afternoon highs to the upper 90s and low 100s.

The average high on today's date at McCarran International Airport is 104 degrees, according to weather service records.
