Lightning strikes ignite wildland fires

Updated Monday, Aug. 4, 2008 | 6:01 p.m.

Lightning strikes this afternoon from thunderstorms over the Spring Mountains, west of Las Vegas, have ignited at least two wildland fires, according to the Bureau of Land Management.

The La Madre fire, previously reported as a fire at Lone Mountain west of the 215 Beltway, is burning on a ridgeline west of the 215, said BLM spokeswoman Kirsten Cannon.

Fire activity has dropped significantly since the fire was reported to local fire departments about 3:30 p.m., Cannon said. No size estimate is available at this time.

Reports of the fire poured into the Lake Vegas Fire Department's dispatch desk, according to department spokesman Tim Szymanski. Neither city nor Clark County firefighters responded to the blaze, he said.

Another fire on State Route 157, known as Kyle Canyon Road leading to Mount Charleston, was also spotted near Harris Springs, Cannon said. The small fire was doused at one-tenth of an acre.

No buildings are threatened and no injuries have been reported, Cannon said.
