BLM finishes assessment of power line

The Bureau of Land Management announced today that it has finalized an environmental assessment for an electricity transmission line between Northern Nevada and Southern Nevada.

The assessment was finished for the southern half of the Southwest Intertie Project -- from the Las Vegas area to Ely -- that eventually will run 520 miles, from Las Vegas to near Burley, Idaho. The bureau's district manager in Ely signed a document on July 30 stating that the transmission line won't have a significant environmental effect.

Construction of the southern portion of the line could begin in September.

Idaho Power in 1994 received a right-of-way grant from the Bureau of Land Management to the Southwest Intertie Project, to run from Idaho to the Dry Lake substation northeast of Las Vegas.

For more information, visit the BLM Ely District Web site. The BLM's Wells field office in Elko is responsible for the northern portion of the transmission line, from Ely into Idaho.
