Fiery couch displaces family of four

A mother, toddler and infant at home in a single-story home near Bruce Street and Bonanza Avenue are being assisted by the American Red Cross after a couch on their front patio burst into flames.

The toddler touched the front door of the home at 379 N. 15th St. from inside and told his mother he burned his hand, said Tim Szymanski, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman.

When she opened the front door, the mother found a sofa in flames, Szymanski said. She tried throwing water on the fire, but the flames grew and she left the home with her two children.

The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, Szymanski said.

The flames damaged the front of the home and some parts of the living room. The damage was estimated at $20,000, Szymanski said.

The Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation also assisted the family.
