Letter to the editor:

Corporations loyal, but only to top execs

There are wrongs in America that need to be made right. One of the worst is the lack of loyalty of so many corporations toward their employees.

Too many corporations have laid off hundreds or even thousands of employees as a cost-saving measure. They then turn around and award top executives multimillion-dollar bonuses and benefit packages.

All too often this happens when a company is virtually bankrupt because of the avarice and incompetence of the chief executive and other company officers.

A recent example is David Sambol, the departed president of Countrywide Financial Corp. This company, in its greed for profit, made substandard mortgage loans that have come back to haunt it.

Now Mr. Sambol leaves with a $28 million severance package, and laid-off employees are left holding the bag.
