Letter to the editor:

Get off your high horse: People are reading

Regarding a story in Wednesday’s Las Vegas Sun headlined “A reading of Las Vegas’ intellect”:

That was truly the most snarky thing I’ve read in the Sun yet, and that is saying something. I’m unclear as to your purpose in writing this.

If you needed to reassure yourself that you are smarter than the people who read your items in the newspaper, you have failed. You mostly proved that you are incredibly rude and condescending.

I’m an elementary school teacher, and I have mostly taught children (in three different states) who came from families where reading was not a priority. I’ve assured them and their parents that reading anything is better than not reading at all.

Read the cereal box, read the TV Guide, but read. Yes, comic books and “lowbrow” best-sellers count as reading.

Who made you King of Culture with the authority to ridicule what other people read? They’re going to the library! Hooray! They’re reading something, hooray!

Good for Robb Morss, the Library District’s deputy director of public services. I agree with his comment: “Well, people are reading and that’s a good thing.”
