Propane barbecue sparks house fire

A propane barbecue too close to a house near U.S. 95 and Jones Boulevard sparked a fire that damaged two rooms and the roof, Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

A man at the home at 6325 Parsifal Place lit the barbecue, which was against the back of the house, and when he came back from thawing food to cook he saw flames around the bottom of the unit and the side of the house. He tried to put the fire out with a garden hose, but the flames continued to burn, Szymanski said.

A dining room, a bedroom, the roof and the attic area were damaged, estimated at $65,000, Szymanski said.

A pet cat home at the time is missing.

The fire was ruled accidental, Szymanski said.

The man did not want assistance from the American Red Cross. He was assisted by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Foundation, Szymanski said. Neighbors provided him with a place to stay.
