Collision kills motorcyclist, prompts evacuations

A collision with a pickup truck killed a motorcyclist late this morning in North Las Vegas and led to the evacuation of several businesses while authorities investigated the threat of an explosion.

North Las Vegas police said officers responded at about 11:20 a.m. today to the intersection of West Craig Road and Fuselier Street regarding a fatal crash involving a 2002 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck and a motorcycle.

Investigators determined the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Craig in the middle lane when the 57-year-old driver of the pickup truck made a left turn and entered the travel path of the motorcycle. The motorcyclist was thrown from the motorcycle and struck the right side of the truck, authorities said.

He was taken to University Medical Center, where he later died of his injuries. The motorcyclist's name wasn't being released this afternoon.

At about 2 p.m., authorities investigating the crash found a military explosive TNT container beneath the motorcycle. Because of an explosion threat associated with the container, police said, several businesses in the area were evacuated while the Las Vegas Fire Department's bomb squad investigated the container.

The container was determined to be an authentic, but empty, military TNT container. Those who evacuated area businesses were allowed to return at about 3:15 p.m.
