Man killed in San Diego beach collapse from Henderson

The 57-year-old man who died when part of a San Diego beach cliff collapsed on him Wednesday has been identified as Robert Allen Mellone of Henderson, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said.

Cause of death was trauma to the head, the coroner's office said.

Mellone was visiting Torrey Pines State Beach and was sitting in the sand about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when rocks and soil fell about 25 feet from a nearby cliff, burying him, authorities said.

His brother and a nephew were tossing a Frisbee nearby and dug him out of the rockslide. They began CPR and emergency medical crews tried for 45 minutes to revive him, authorities said.

Mellone was taken to the Scripps La Jolla Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:20 p.m., the coroner's office said.
