Firefighters rescue two men injured in trench

Henderson and Clark County Fire Department crews scrambled into a trench near Sunset Avenue and Boulder Highway about 11 p.m. Tuesday to rescue two construction workers who were injured after being hit by a pipe that was being moved.

The men were at the bottom of an open trench about 10 feet deep, six feet wide and 15 feet long, fire officials said.

Both men appeared to have significant injuries, potentially life- threatening, so Clark County Fire Department rescuers as well as a Mercy Air helicopter were called.

After the trench was determined to be stable, both men were taken to local hospitals, one by air ambulance and the other by ground ambulance, fire officials said.

A total of 33 rescue workers responded to the call.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, said Battalion Chief Matt Morris.
