Boulder in brief

Community blood drive to be held

A community blood drive will be held Sept. 4 from 1 to 7 p.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel Gym, 916 Fifth St.

All donors receive a voucher for two free all-day passes for the Adventuredome at Circus Circus Hotel-Casino.

For an appointment, contact Lee McDonald at 795-8335.

Tickets on sale for Chautauqua shows

The annual Chautauqua presentation takes place on Sept. 13 at the Boulder Theatre, 1225 Arizona St. Performances are at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

This year's theme is "All the World's a Stage." Frank Mullen will portray Henry VIII during the 1:30 p.m. show, and Brian Kral will portray playwright Eugene O'Neill during the 6:30 p.m. performance. Pianist Charlie Shaffer is featured at both shows.

Tickets are $10 for each performance and there is open seating. Chautauqua is hosted by Boulder City Museum and Historical Association. Twenty-six merchants are offering "Chautauqua Specials" in their shops and restaurants.

Tickets are available at the Boulder City/Hoover Dam Museum in the Boulder Dam Hotel, 1305 Arizona St., at the Boulder City News office, 508 Nevada Way, or at Borders in Henderson and Las Vegas.

Call 326-9997 or 293-0833 for tickets or more information.

Food drive planned for Emergency Aid

A food drive to benefit Emergency Aid of Boulder City will be held Sept. 20.

Residents are asked to have bags of non-perishable items at outside their front door by 10 a.m. on Sept. 20, and the bags will be picked up by volunteers from a number of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints wards. Emergency Aid officials ask that glass items not be included with donations.

Because of the economy, more new people are relying on Emergency Aid, and food supplies are running low, directors say.

For more information, call Emergency Aid at 293-0332.

Gamble-Aires to perform free concert

A free concert will be held at the Boulder City Library Amphitheatre on Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m.

The Las Vegas Gamble-Aires Barbershop Chorus will perform, along with two featured quartets, Broadcast and Older 'n Dirt.

The groups sing in an a capella, close four-part harmony style.

The concert is sponsored by Boulder City, El Dorado Energy and Friends of The Arts.
