Letter to the editor:

Why won’t U.S. pursue desalination?

I enjoyed Brian Greenspun’s Sunday column about an all-electric car being developed in Israel, and I feel confident he is betting on a sure thing. I hope Mr. Greenspun, as someone with a lot of knowledge about, and as a frequent visitor to, Israel, will see fit soon to write a column explaining how Israel is able to desalinate sea water to increase its supply of fresh water and why the United States cannot do the same.

The beauty of the car project is not only that nothing new has to be discovered or invented, but that the project is also a private-public partnership. This type of partnership allows the project to go forward now when the technology is available and the need is great.

The practical all-electric car will benefit not only Israel but eventually the entire world, including the United States.

Has our country’s government become so inflexible that something as necessary as fresh water to help reduce the drought (especially in the Southwest, including Nevada) is being sacrificed because American companies armed with technology and vision but lacking the support of our government are unable to get us what we so badly need now? I’d really hate to think so.
