Who’s going to the penthouse in local sports and beyond — and who’s getting the shaft:

GOING UP

Proper props

What’s a Super Bowl without a keen proposition wager or two? Or 300? That’s what you get in the Hilton sports book’s 23 pages of props. The picks here: game to be decided by 3 points (plus-550), New England’s Mike Vrabel to score a TD (plus-500) and New York’s Kevin Boss to score the first TD (20-1). For entertainment purposes only, of course.

Out of a shadow

Las Vegas native and UCLA senior gymnast Jordan Schwikert helped the Bruins squeak by Stanford over the weekend with a season-best 9.9 on the uneven bars. She also got a 9.8 in the floor exercise, earning Pac-10 specialist of the week honors. Not bad for Tasha’s younger sister. Tasha Schwikert, the 2005 NCAA all-around champion, also is a senior at UCLA.

Teeing off

The UNLV men’s golf team finished second, three shots behind Tennessee, at the 16-team Ping Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson this week. The Rebels have finished in the top five in their past four tournaments. Ji Moon led the Rebels, tying for fifth, with a 6-under-par 207. The freshman hails from Lake Mary (Fla.) High, which also produced Jeremy Anderson, who played on UNLV’s 1998 national championship team.

More than shoes

A round of applause for Breona Gray, JV coach and varsity assistant coach in boys basketball at the Agassi Prep Academy. A graduate of Bishop Gorman High and the University of Notre Dame, Gray bought shoes for both teams this season. Basketball is in her blood — her mother, Dedra Edmond, gave birth to Breona after watching UNLV beat Utah State, 142-140, in triple overtime on Jan. 2, 1985.

GOING DOWN

More defense, Jim

Since starting 9-3, James Madison has slipped. The Dukes and guard Heiden Ratner, a freshman from Silverado High, are 10-10 and play at George Mason today. Jim vs. George. JMU has not had a winning season since 1999-2000. Ratner averages 22 minutes and is hitting 40.5 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Too long

Two weeks between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl is way too long, as evidenced by the revelation of Bishop Gorman grad Grey Ruegamer’s past antics at a friend’s farm in the desert. Ruegamer, a 31-year-old guard for the New York Giants, and company castrated 200 sheep via an old Basque method. We would have much rather heard about the challenges of playing in that game in Green Bay.
