The Elevator

Who’s headed toward the penthouse on the local sports scene — and who’s getting the shaft.

GOING UP

Coyotes baseballers

Or, more specifically, the booster who provided College of Southern Nevada baseball coach Tim Chambers with $20,000 to travel to Florida last weekend for a prestigious tournament. It was the first cross-country trip for CSN in its nine seasons. The top four teams in the country played, and each went 2-2. Chambers’ players could not thank him enough at the airport in Tallahassee. The booster, meanwhile, wants to remain anonymous.

Butler did it

UNLV’s swimming and diving teams have an impressive new records board — 15 feet by 32 feet — at Buchanan Natatorium, thanks to Jenn Butler. A pioneer of the women’s program, Butler works for Microsoft and coaxed the company into matching her $2,000 donation for the board. It’s black and red and decked out with UNLV logos and mascots. Butler swam for the Rebels from 1978 to 1982.

Offer from the Hitman

The e-mail arrived Thursday. The picture of Ricky Hatton immediately caught attention. He’s outside a boxing ring in a white T-shirt, pointing at the camera with his left hand. Be the first to register for tickets to his next fight, in Manchester. Being a fan of Hatton and England, I thought it it sounded great. Seeing his beloved Man City footballers would be keen, too. But, Ricky, that exchange rate! I’ll be watching on the telly.

Go, Uno!

Since Uno became the first beagle to win Best in Show at the annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show Tuesday, area owners of the breed must be prancing around with glee. Apparently, though, they’re a unique breed of their own. The American Kennel Club estimates the beagle is the fifth-most-popular breed in the country, but it doesn’t make the top 10 in Las Vegas. Beagle owners, rejoice.

GOING DOWN

It’s not what you know ...

UNLV’s club hockey team was ranked 11th in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division-II hockey poll but needed to finish in the top 10 for a spot in the regional playoffs in Oakland. It won its final four games, finishing 13-13-4, but dropped to 12th in Tuesday’s final poll. No postseason. Thanks, ACHA. The Rebels learned an important lesson — you need friends in high places.

Strike three?

It’s very likely a make-or-break season for fifth-year UNLV baseball coach Buddy Gouldsmith. The Rebels were picked fifth by coaches and media in a preseason conference poll. That’s rough, considering the Mountain West is a seven-team conference and Air Force is a perennial bottom feeder. UNLV is trying to avoid a third consecutive losing season.
