Letter to the editor:

Silver not the right choice to head UMC

What is a resident of Clark County to make of the quote attributed to Kathy Silver in the Las Vegas Sun’s Sunday article headlined “UMC pick: What kind of success”?

Silver, the current interim chief executive of University Medical Center, stated she did not report the rampant abuses of her boss Lacy Thomas because “people got fired” for speaking out. One would have to wonder if she realizes she is a public servant, hired to look out for the interests of the residents of Clark County, not her own.

If anything, she and the county manager should be summarily fired for dereliction of duty for their silence and lack of oversight in this sordid mess. Wasn’t Virginia Valentine, as county manager, Thomas’ supervisor? What happened to accountability in Clark County government?

As for Silver, her application should be tossed she hasn’t earned and doesn’t deserve the privilege of serving Clark County residents, based on her dismal past. I am encouraged that at least one of the UMC candidates does seem to understand what it means to be a public servant Adm. Brian Brannman, who advocates “servant leadership,” in which the public official fully recognizes the obligation to look out for the public’s interest over his own.

Maybe Valentine and Silver should consider reading a book on servant leadership so they can get a clue to how dismally they have failed the residents of Clark County.
