Letter to the editor:

Why not display odds on slot machines?

According to Richard Velotta’s Sunday article (“Don’t worry: Your slot bets are still safe”), server-based control of slot machines will soon be implemented in Nevada casinos. Since it’s impossible to hold back progress in the gaming industry, this will probably increase the operational efficiency of slot machines and the bottom line.

What is scary for the slot player is that with a few keystrokes, a manager can change denomination, percentage hold and appearance.

To dispel any thoughts that something illegal has occurred, why not display the percentage hold or the odds on the slot machine’s screen? This would assure the player that the chances of the machine’s payback have not changed. This is nothing more than truth in advertising or truth in gambling.

With table games such as blackjack, craps and roulette, the odds are transparent to most experienced players.
