Letter to the editor:

Honor those who keep U.S. free

I believe that high school student Devon Smith’s refusal to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance, although legal, is morally repugnant. In addition, it maligns the sweat, blood and tears of the Founding Fathers and subsequent Americans in and out of the military who have kept this nation free. Our cemeteries here and overseas contain the heroes who gave their lives for that purpose.

Many of our nation’s heroes were wounded, suffering unimaginably and often for the rest of their lives, so that people like Mr. Smith could either honor or ignore their sacrifices.

Rather than sit, Mr. Smith should proudly stand as a token of esteem for those whom the flag and words represent.
