Ron Levesque gave a detailed, though flawed, breakdown of our tax structure in Sunday’s letter headlined “History shows that Democrats raise taxes.”
What every argument against taxes fails to discuss, however, is the overall picture, which is quite simply this: We live in the society that we are willing to pay for.
Those Americans who have been to other countries and noticed the condition of their streets, their buildings and their infrastructure; their water quality; the education level of their population; the safety of tourists and locals; and their overall quality of life, and then looked at the taxes that are collected, might understand the correlation.
It’s one we all acknowledge in this country when we shop, but seem to ignore when we vote: You get what you pay for.
