Letter to the Editor:

Democrats should unite behind Obama

Isn’t it about time Democrats took a page out of the Republican election year playbook?

Rather than hammer at John McCain, who is very hammerable, Mitt Romney conceded and endorsed his rival candidate for the party’s nomination. One can only guess why Mike Huckabee is hanging on: most likely to keep McCain on the conservative path or to pitch for a vice presidential berth, or both.

Two leading Democrats, however, continue to debate and to expose each other’s weaknesses and vulnerabilities as each seeks the party’s nomination. Continuing to do so will serve only to enhance Republican chances of another four or even eight years of the same tired, dangerous, debilitating Bush domestic and foreign policies.

The only smart thing for the Democrats to do is recognize the impetus of the Barack Obama movement, line up behind him, choose a vice president — Bill Richardson, preferably, who will attract the Hispanic vote and bring serious depth to the ticket — and mark Hillary Clinton as the country’s next qualified secretary of state.

It would be a winning combination come November.
