Letter to the Editor:

Gasoline temperature a minor concern

An editorial in Tuesday’s Las Vegas Sun, on consumers’ getting fleeced at the gas pump, points out that when the temperature of gasoline gets over 60 degrees, consumers pay more. But the editorial ignores the fact that when it is less than 60 degrees, consumers pay less.

The gasoline is stored in large underground tanks and its temperature should not be much affected by outside air temperature. A 10-degree change in temperature results in a 1 percent change in volume. The cost and maintenance for temperature-adjusted pumps would probably exceed any cost savings averaged over the year.

A more perverse fleecing of the gas consumer is the use of ethanol in gasoline. Ethanol has only 61 percent of the energy of gasoline. Any additional use of ethanol beyond that required for the summer blend should be stated on the pump.
