Letter to the Editor:

Congress points finger, escapes blame

There is constant haranguing about President Bush and when he will be held accountable. What shall we hold him accountable for — budget deficits, the Iraq war, oil prices, food shortages, dandruff, eczema?

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi blames the president for budget deficits. The House of Representatives originates all appropriation and tax bills. Sen. Barack Obama rails about Bush’s war. Only the Congress can declare war.

How did we get into this energy mess? In the 1960s the Congress made many federal holdings both on- and offshore off-limits to exploration and development. Food shortages and high prices may be the result of legislation to promote ethanol and biomass fuels. As for dandruff and eczema, maybe the Congress can hold hearings.

The problems of the country can be traced directly to the 535 members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, who spend a majority of their time trying to convince the voters that what is going on is not their fault.

H.L. Mencken wrote, “The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed and hence clamorous to be led to safety, by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.”

It is time to vote these people out of office and straighten out their mess!
