Letter to the Editor:

Shades of Orwell in GOP’s language

President Bush and his conservative allies have given many commonly used expressions in our political lexicon almost Orwellian “double-think” meanings. We’re familiar with Fox News, which is anything but “fair and balanced.”

But consider other examples such as “compassionate conservatism,” which, via Bush’s and the GOP’s actions, has been anything but compassionate, or their policy of promoting “family values” that have not valued most American families and in fact have discriminated against many.

Or how about “a culture of life,” quite a policy label for a leader whose actions in Iraq have contributed to 600,000 deaths, including those of many children. Or how about the phrase “mission accomplished,” given that it’s five years later and counting?

I’m sure your readers can think of dozens more! I guess 1984 just came 24 years too early!
