Letter to the editor:

U.S. should turn Iraq over to its people

Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of their way and let them have it.”

How incredibly wonderful it would be if our government could step aside at this time, when Iraq’s leaders want America to set a timetable for exiting Iraq. Most of the people I talk to advise they would love to see an end to this war, and use the $12 billion monthly for problems that go on here in this country.

I wonder if our representatives realize that Democrats were voted into office to get us out of Iraq. I wonder if House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will ever tire of trying to please President Bush.

It’s still hard to believe that soon Bush will leave office, and I hope a much more sensible person will take his place. I wonder why my son has to go back to Iraq in January — too bad he doesn’t need a parent’s permission slip to do so.
