Letter to the editor:

Gramm’s callousness on economy stunning

Former Sen. Phil Gramm has stated that Americans are whining about the state of the economy. He has also stated that a perceived economic recession or downturn is really just an illusion.

I guess we are just imagining $4.25-a-gallon gas, increasing grocery costs, losses of homes and jobs, etc. It must be the heat that is affecting my wallet, not the economy.

Gramm is a political fat cat who became a multimillionaire, not as an economist but as a U.S. senator. He has fed at the political trough in Washington and enriched his personal bank account through multiple terms in office.

He has taken freely from the people’s treasury with personal health, retirement and insurance benefits that are not available to the average citizen. He continually voted against similar benefits for his fellow citizens.

Gramm’s “let them eat cake” attitude recalls the similar philosophy of the Hoover administration that led to the Great Depression in 1929. The working-class American is regarded with disdain but courted for votes with promises of better things to come and a pledge to improve the status of the working man. His callous attitude doesn’t show serious compassion for the average American. Remember Marie Antoinette?

Sen. John McCain states he doesn’t accept Gramm’s ideas, yet he continues to rely on him as his chief economic adviser. That is like hiring the fox to guard henhouse eggs. I wonder how this will work if McCain becomes our president.
