Hospitality trade chief appointed to medical board

Gov. Jim Gibbons is appointing Van Heffner of Las Vegas to the state Board of Medical Examiners.

Heffner will replace Donald Baepler, who died this year, as one of three non-physicians on the board.

Heffner is president and CEO of the Nevada Hotel and Lodging Association, a hospitality trade group, and president of Heffner & Associates, Inc., a consulting company, said Ben Kieckefer, the governor's spokesman.

Heffner came to the governor offering further service in state government after he was not reappointed to the state Tourism Commission, Kieckefer said.

Heffner had been chief executive of the Nevada Tourism Alliance, a nonprofit trade association, and executive director of the Nevada Restaurant Association.

In 1999 he received a Public Health Hero award from the Southern Nevada Health District and a community achievement in tourism award in 1998 from the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. He was also received a county humanitarian award from Clark County in 1996.

The state Board of Medical Examiners has nine members appointed by the governor. Members serve four-year terms and may not serve more than two consecutive full terms. Six members must be licensed to practice medicine in Nevada and three members must not be people licensed to practice medicine.
