Gas prices slip near $4 mark

Gas prices came closer to slipping below the $4 mark in Las Vegas after another dip at the pump today.

AAA reported that a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was selling for an average of $4.02 today in the Las Vegas metro area. The average a month ago was $4.26 -- just 2 cents below the record high set on June 21.

Premium gasoline carried an average price tag of $4.28 today in the valley.

The price of gas was cheaper in Las Vegas than other parts of Nevada. The state average today is $4.04 a gallon.

Local prices are still well above the national average, which hovered at $3.94 today. Nevada is one of 14 states where gas prices still are above the $4 mark.

At $4.30 a gallon, Californians are paying the highest gas prices outside of Alaska and Hawaii. The nation's cheapest gas was in Minnesota, at $3.70 a gallon.

Oil prices were on the decline again today. Light, sweet crude for September delivery was down $1.36 to $123.37 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The price of oil has dropped in seven of the last 10 sessions, and is down about 15 percent from its peak above $147 a barrel earlier this month.
