Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air announced today that it will end service between Vegas and Lincoln, Neb., and add the service at Central Nebraska Regional Airport in Grand Island, Neb.
Company president and CEO Maurice J. Gallagher said the decision was based on high fuel costs and increased competition from low-cost flights 60 miles away in Omaha, Neb. Introductory fares will begin at $79 one-way at Grand Island.
"This is an exciting new addition for our airline and our customers as we launch the only nonstop jet service between Grand Island and Las Vegas," Gallagher said in a statement today.
The flight will operate twice a week, on Thursday and Saturday.
The last flight from Las Vegas to Lincoln will be Sept. 4. Allegiant said customers with reservations after that date will be contacted by the company regarding other options, including a refund.
Allegiant started the flight between McCarran International Airport and Lincoln Municipal Airport on Feb. 1, 2006.
